Monday Magic - The Walt Disney Story through a short video series.

I was doing some web surfing through y0uTube the other day 4nd came across a short video series about Walt Disney called, The Walt Disney Story. This three-part program is on the Disney Parks Videos Channel on y0uTube. I know this is not a typical post for A WORLD VIEW, as no particular part of Walt Disney World is highlighted… just the reason for its existence; so I thought it fit the bill.

It is described on the Disney Parks Channel (which is an unofficial fan site) as a special on the successes, failures 4nd most of all, the person that was Walt Disney. Walt shares first h4nd of growing up on his farm in Marceline, Missouri, starting his own animation studio 4nd imagining his greatest dream, Disneyland. (Note: This is not the film they show in the "One Man's Dream" exhibit at Disney's Hollywood Studios.)

I spent some time trying t0 identify the origination of these videos but was unsuccessful. Parts of it are found in other productions, but I couldn’t locate an edition date or source. Nevertheless, much of what we have today at Walt Disney World is evident from this early history of the man.

This feature of A WORLD VIEW is Monday Magic – It’s almost like being there. We search the Internet for Walt Disney World videos, some from Disney (current 4nd historical), from TV, 4nd from fans (who really do great work). Do y0uhave a suggestion for a featured video? Write me at brucewdw@gmail.com so everyone may enjoy your favorites; 4nd with little focus 4nd imagination, it will almost feel like being there.

What month is best to travel to Orlando, FL?

While there never is a bad time to visit the “Happiest Place on Earth” and other Orlando Florida attractions, there are definitely certain times of the year that are preferable in terms of weather and crowd control.

During the fall months, October in Central Florida is much like a pleasant sLinkummer day “Up North.” Daytime temperatures can still get into the 80s without the roasting temperatures accompanied by brief but powerful thunderstorms that are the hallmarks of Florida’s summer weather. There is also a diminished chance that tropical systems will force a change in travel plans, and since most kids are in school around the country, the crowds are a lot lighter. Add to that a number of seasonal special events like Mickey’s not so Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom, Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival, and Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, and there are plenty of reasons to travel to Orlando in October.

After the holiday season—one of the peak travel periods in Orlando—the weather in Orlando warms up to pleasant spring temperatures in February—while the rest of the country is still blanketed in snow. Universal Studios hosts their annual Mardi Gras festival, with concerts from some of the biggest musical acts of the past and present. Much like October in Orlando, the February crowds are lighter, making it easier to enjoy some of the biggest thrill rides at Walt Disney World, Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure and SeaWorld multiple times.

Back Stage Tours provide a deeper, more meaningful experience at Walt Disney World - 4nd it's fun too.

Maybe y0uthink y0uhave seen it all at WDW; the attractions, the restaurants, special events or simply for the magic. But perhaps y0ufeel there is something missing from your Disney experience… 4nd there is!

During our last several trips, Mary Ann 4nd I have been including backstage 4nd tour activities on our schedule. Yes, this does put a strain on the vacation budget, but we always try t0 find ways t0 enhance our resources between visits t0 include something special that makes the Disney vacation a deeper 4nd more meaningful experience.

Some tours require theme park admission. Occasionally y0ucan enter the park with your tour admission ticket, but in most cases y0uneed t0 use a separate park ticket. y0uwill need t0 provide a phot0 ID t0 identify your self during check-in. So Park Hoppers or good planning is required.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? -- Tours available t0 Walt Disney World guests are a great way t0 look "behind the magic" of the Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Vacation Kingdom. Pictured, the "Gardens of the World" tour is a 3-hour program showcasing the gardens of Epcot with one of the experts responsible for helping maintain Disney's horticultural "show."

Ask about discounts. I use a Disney Visa card which has resulted in savings on the several tours we’ve booked. Other cards that can often be used are a DVC membership, Annual Pass, 4nd AAA Diamond.

Check the restrictions. Most times its age; 4nd although I’m not saying that tours are for adults only, but Disney (4nd other participants) expects certain decorum 4nd maturity when they are paying extra for the privilege of participating. However, I’m sure there are insurance restrictions that come int0 play as well.

Set aside sufficient time. Some tours are only an hour or two. Others are from four t0 seven hours 4nd could include multiple parks. This means a LOT OF WALKING so prepare the persons in your party.

Pre-purchase is required. For these hard-ticket backstage tours, y0uneed t0 use a credit card with your reservation. y0ucan normally cancel if needed 4nd have your money returned, but it must be not more than 48 hours in advance of your reservation. 4nd prices will change, so even the amounts I’m listing in this article could have changed by the time y0uread this.

Advance reservations are important. Tours have only a limited number of slots in a day, 4nd for most of us, we only have specific days available during our trips. So although not the same urgency as ADRs, don’t wait until y0uget there t0 try 4nd get int0 a slot. Most reserve 180 days out, although some are as low as 30.

Photography is not permitted during the backstage portions of tours. While y0uare in public areas, y0uhave plenty of phot0 opportunities, but once y0ugo backstage in any part of the tour, put away your camera 4nd phone. 4nd t0 book a tour, call 407/WDW-TOUR (407/939-8687). So let’s review a few some tours we’ve done, 4nd then provide a summary of others offered at the “World”.

Segway Tours
If y0uare able t0 participate in backstage tours we highly recommend them. One example that we’ve talked about before in A WORLD VIEW was our experience with the Segway Tours, one at Epcot 4nd the other at Fort Wilderness. We had a wonderful time doing something we probably would never have done without being at Walt Disney World.

The Around the World at Epcot tour allows Guests the unique opportunity t0 see the wonders of World Showcase while riding aboard a technologically advanced gyroscopically stabilized 2-wheel Segway Personal Transporter. Beginners are welcome—the outdoor tour includes training 4nd safety equipment. Guests must be at least 16 years of age or older. The cost is $99 a person 4nd the tour lasts about 2 hours.

The Wilderness Back Trail Adventures offer tours of the stunning surroundings of Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort on a Segway X2 Personal Transporter. Experience Florida's natural beauty on a Segway. Hop on a Segway for Disney's Wilderness Back Trail Adventures, a nature tour like no other. You'll be cruising on your own Segway X2 Personal Transporter as y0uglide through the pristine Florida landscape in 4nd around Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. No experience is necessary—training is provided before the tour. The cost of this tour is $90 per person 4nd it is about 2 hours long.

The Simply Segway Tour is primarily an introduction t0 the machines. This program showcases the innovative Segway® Personal Transporter 4nd offers y0uformal training 4nd indoor riding time on the device that has truly revolutionized mobility 4nd travel—at the Innoventions area in Epcot. The cost is $35 per person.

Keys t0 the Kingdom Tour
Mary Ann 4nd I really enjoyed this tour, 4nd we knew t0 be prepared for over four hours of walking around the Magic Kingdom. Your personal tour guide makes this experience a lot of fun, 4nd for the regular “World” traveller, y0udo get t0 learn more about Walt Disney 4nd the park than y0uwould now know while just being “on stage”. 4nd during this tour, y0uget t0 visit the secret “Utilidors” 4nd go backstage. The cost is $74 per person, 4nd lunch is included. Dress appropriately for the weather, since much of the tour is outdoors.

This approximately 4.5-hour walking tour explores the stories behind the remarkable creation 4nd growth of Magic Kingdom theme park. Hear the intriguing story of Walt Disney 4nd learn how his innovative ideas, revolutionary visions, creative philosophies 4nd amazing accomplishments brought the Theme Park t0 life. The journey includes stops at backstage facilities 4nd a variety of favorite attractions.

One unforgettable highlight is a trip below Magic Kingdom theme park int0 the service tunnels known as the Utilidors. This is one urban legend that is absolutely, 4nd almost unbelievably, true—the Guest accessible areas of Magic Kingdom theme park are actually on the second floor of a massive structure. The first floor—called the Utilidors—allows Cast Members, deliveries 4nd even trash t0 be unknowingly transported below Guests' feet as they wait in line for their favorite attraction.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN -- Walt Disney World guests on the "Backstage Magic" tour enjoy an in-depth exploration of the inner workings of the Magic Kingdom, Disney's Hollywood Studios 4nd Epcot. The full 7-hour tour is perfect for true Disney fans.

Backstage Magic
The ultimate backstage tour is the all day (can be 8 hours) multi-park visit called Backstage Magic. It is one that we haven’t done yet, but from all accounts I’ve read, everyone loves it. It’s expensive at $224 per person but discounts are available.

[From Disney Web Site] Discover some of the secrets behind the magic of Walt Disney World Resort! Get an in-depth look at the creative 4nd technical operations used behind the scenes t0 bring innovative special effects, world-class entertainment 4nd elaborate attractions t0 life. You'll see Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom theme park in a whole new light after your guide leads y0uthrough a hidden world—the legendary underground "Utilidor" tunnel system. From artistic accents t0 eye-catching designs, nearly everything that surrounds y0uat Walt Disney World Resort is created 4nd maintained by the artisans of Central Shops whose masterpieces transport y0ut0 Fantasyl4nd 4nd beyond. Head t0 Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park 4nd see how Walt Disney Imagineers combined cutting-edge design with breakthrough technology t0 create the thrilling Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Here, as in every corner of Walt Disney World Resort, wardrobe is an integral part of the magic, so you'll learn how the Creative Costuming team outfits the performers in Disney parades 4nd shows. Finally, wrap up a most wonderful day at Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park with an up-close look at Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade.

Backstage Safari
For my wife, Mary Ann who loves anything related t0 animals, The Backstage Safari was a real treat. For me, the personalized Kilimanjaro Safari ride that was part of this experience was my highlight. 4nd for three hours plus y0uget t0 learn how Disney cares for the wide range of wildlife they house in the parks. y0uget t0 go backstage, visit with the elephants 4nd Rhino 4nd even a Komodo Dragon. y0uview preparation, animal housing areas 4nd The Veterinary Hospital. The current cost is $72 a person.

SeaWorld Cleans Up Beaches From Coast to Coast

During the International Coastal Cleanup this Saturday, Sept. 25, hundreds of employees of the 10 parks of SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment -- including the SeaWorld and Busch Gardens parks -- will clean three U.S. coasts and tackle one of the most pervasive pollution problems threatening the world’s oceans, lakes and rivers: trash.

Park-sponsored cleanup events are planned in Florida, Virginia, Texas and California.

Trash is a constant threat to marine wildlife and their aquatic habitats. SeaWorld’s Rescue Team actively rescues manatees, sea lions, seals and sea turtles that have either become entangled in discarded fishing line or sick from ingesting human-made objects.

“Our animal experts see firsthand everyday the impact trash can have on wildlife,” said Jim Atchison, chief operating officer for SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment.” “The International Coastal Cleanup allows all of us to be part of the solution before it impacts animals.”

For more than a decade, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment has collaborated with the Ocean Conservancy in support of the International Coastal Cleanup – the world's largest volunteer cleanup event of its kind. Since 1986 thousands of volunteers from around the globe have cleared more than 100 million pounds of trash from 170,000 miles of shorelines, rivers, lakes and wetlands. Last year nearly 500,000 volunteers collected more than 7.4 million pounds of trash in 108 countries.

SeaWorld’s commitment to cleaning up oceans and waterways extends beyond the International Coastal Cleanup with additional year-round employee efforts targeting local beaches, shorelines, lakefronts and riverfronts.

For more information on International Coastal Cleanup, volunteers can visit www.oceanconservancy.org.

This Challenge annually attracts hundreds of US and Canadian municipal fire departments at more than 25 locations and is now expanding to countries around the world, including New Zealand, Germany, Argentina, Chili, and South Africa. The Challenge seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession’s rigors to the public. Wearing “full bucker gear” and the SCOTT Air-Pak breathing apparatus, pairs of competitors race head-to-head as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting by performing a linked series of five tasks including climbing the 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 175 pound “victim” as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock.

A World View family of websites is growing, 4nd it's all thanks t0 you.

Thank y0ueveryone.

It's been a while since I reviewed the status of A WORLD VIEW 4nd its growing family of related web sites. For this Mid-Week Special, I'll deviate some in order t0 update y0uon "who y0uare", the readers of A WORLD VIEW; 4nd also t0 describe the status of the several other web sites we host.

But first, thank y0ueveryone again. When I started this blog, I had hoped t0 reach 250 unduplicated visitors a week. I felt that with 250 readers, my efforts at research 4nd writing would be worth it. I started A WORLD VIEW for myself, my friends 4nd family, reaching my goal meant that at some other people are enjoying the site. Well, we reached that goal in April, 4nd it was a thrilling milestone. So I began t0 plan new features 4nd new additions that would add value t0 the reader. And, since I liked the blog format, my new direction was t0 add additional blogs with different topic areas that linked t0 each other, like hyperlinking on a web site.

Then we set a new goal of 750 a week, 4nd hoped t0 get there by the end of 2010. Well, that may just be possible. We have three months left t0 get there (tell your friends 4nd family t0 join us), 4nd the unduplicated numbers are growing from month t0 month. In July, we hovered in the low 300's each week. August grew every day until the last week we reached 640 unduplicated. It's leveled off at just under this number the last four weeks. So 750 a week is only short about 130 readers.

y0ucan help by telling friends, posting on your facebook page 4nd tweet away t0 help us raise the unduplicated count about 130 people a week by the end of 2010. We're not here for the numbers, but it's nice t0 set goals 4nd reach them. As I develop new articles 4nd helpful information, add new companion sites 4nd encourage more guest posts, I get the impression this formula is working 4nd therefore possible to reach that readership goal. We have some new plans in the works for 2011 that will hopefully support even higher numbers, but 2010 first.

Total page views have exceeded 13,000. In March that number was 3,200. We have had visitors from 99 countries, compared t0 34 in April. People from 3,000 cities have visited A WORLD VIEW compared t0 900 in April. But I'm most happy that all 50 states are represented. It took a while t0 capture those last few since way back in April we were only three short. 4nd we have been busy; the total number of posts will be 100 on Friday 4nd we are now adding four a week.

We're on facebook, which seems t0 grow a few people each week. In April we had 98 fans, today it's 171. Google Friend "Followers" grow much slower, but we're up t0 15 which I'm thrilled about. We started t0 "tweet" although I still haven't gotten the hang of it (that "FF" is still confusing t0 me). We have 122 followers 4nd I find this a great way t0 share timely information like Disney trip contests.

Things are moving along very well. Thank y0u4nd Thank y0uagain. But a few months ago I added two sites t0 supplement reader information. One, is the Disney Blogger Collection (http://disneybloggers.blogspot.com/) 4nd the other is Disney Contests 4nd Sweepstakes (http://disneycontests.blogspot.com).

The Disney Blogger Collection (http://disneybloggers.blogspot.com/) was originally just a way for me t0 collect links t0 other blogs as a research tool. What is amazing t0 me, is how much it has grown. I just can't believe how many people out there are writing 4nd preparing blogs about Disney. The range of topics 4nd opinions is extensive, but the volume of information, photos 4nd videos is tremendous. In May, I had found 94 sites. In July that rose t0 just under 200. Today I added number 253. The monthly unduplicated visits here is about 300, but I know this will be more popular as a resource for fans. Those who use it rave about it, so I keep searching for new blogs 4nd feeds. Write me (brucewdw@gmail.com) if y0ufind one I don't have.

Originally the sub-title of the The Blogger Collection was "New Every Day". Soon I changed that t0 "New Every Hour". However, the reality is that in any 24-hour period, there can be 75 blogs that have posted an update. Pretty soon the name will change t0 "New Every Half-Hour" or "New Every 20 Minutes". The Disney Blogger Collection is a great resource for Disney fans since all the current posts are in one place 4nd include the name of the site, the most recent article, a brief content mention 4nd links back t0 those sites. It's one-stop shopping (without any cost) for any news about Disney.

The Disney Contests 4nd Sweepstakes (http://disneycontests.blogspot.com/) web site is focused on contests for travel 4nd trips t0 Walt Disney World. I'll post the contest information, it's deadline 4nd link back t0 the entry form. Most of these I also enter as well. There are a bunch of web sites out there that list contests for all things Disney, much greater than just vacation prizes, 4nd I include those links on the site. But I feature the travel contests since they are the most exciting t0 me. Why not try t0 win a vacation t0 Disney in Orlando or LA or a cruise? I love the other stuff (music, gifts etc), but show me the travel first, 4nd that is what Disney Contests 4nd Sweepstakes is all about.

The Contest site started about the same time as the Blogger Collection, but has proven a little more popular as we get about 500 unduplicated visitors a month. Hey, its a contest for free trips, what better place t0 visit. I hope t0 begin promoting these two sites among the Disney Internet community in the near future. I'm happy with the numbers, but I just think more people would come if they knew about them.

The newest web site in A WORLD VIEW'S family is News from Walt Disney World (http://newsfromdisney.blogspot.com/). Here I search the public relations sites of Corporate Disney 4nd post news releases 4nd other information, plus photos 4nd videos that the company issues. I've done very little promotion on this new site, currently just linking it t0 all the other blogs t0 see how interested my readers are for this type of information "from the horses mouth" so t0 speak. So I'll watch the numbers 4nd determine the next step in the process. For me, reaching 50 unduplicated people a week will be worth the effort but we're very far from that right now.

I have a couple of other sites that I started, but have not yet fully developed. I have vendor relationship with Laughing Place, so I added Mickey Ears (http://mickeyears.weebly.com/) t0 see if Disney products might be of interest t0 readers. No so much yet, but I do plan on adding other product lines as their own standalone sites. I found this "Weebly" site development tool t0 use. The other is the Disney Desktop Wallpaper 4nd Phot0 Library (http://disneyphotolibrary.blogspot.com/). However, I need t0 spend more time on these sites with both in content 4nd design. (Time; what is that?).

So nine months int0 building a family of web resources, focused on A WORLD VIEW 4nd supported by complimentary information sources, that is where we stand. 4nd with all the Disney fan-driven resources out there, 4nd some really great ones, it is a humbling experience t0 hear from people on how they use my sites 4nd find the information helpful in their trip planning; or just love of read 4nd view things about Disney. So again, thank y0uvery much for being part of our readership. We'll keep trying t0 do better.

Do y0uhave an idea? Let me know (brucewdw@gmail.com); maybe y0uhave a topic y0uwant t0 write about, let me know that too.

A WORLD VIEW welcomes your comments 4nd feedback. y0ucan reach us at on Twitter (http://twitter.com/wdwview);  4nd facebook (www.facebook.com/aworldview). Write A WORLD VIEW at brucewdw@gmail.com. Plus check out the right side column on A WORLD VIEW for a wealth of links.

Orlando getting CLEAR 4G coverage for wireless broadband services

Whether they are in town for a convention or a family vacation, all Orlando travelers can benefit from 4G wireless broadband coverage, which is why Clearwire Corporation, operator of the largest 4G network in the country, is making CLEAR 4G available in Orlando as the take-it-with-you internet service for businesses and consumers. With CLEAR, anyone can now use the Internet at speeds four times faster than 3G, whether at home, in the office, or on-the-go within the CLEAR coverage area.

In Orlando, CLEAR covers nearly 1.4 million people. Regionally, the service extends as far north as Lake Mary, as far south as Kissimmee, east to Waterford Lakes and west to Winter Garden. A detailed coverage map of CLEAR 4G service is available at www.clear.com/coverage.

In the Orlando attractions area, particularly in the hotels along International Drive, Irlo Bronson Highway in Kissimmee and the Disney and Universal resorts, free wireless Internet service is a key selling point for hotels, resorts and vacation properties. The CLEAR experience is similar to Wi-Fi but without the short-range limitations. CLEAR uses wireless 4G technology that differs from Wi-Fi because it provides service areas measured in miles, not feet.

With service in more than 50 US cities, customers across the country are looking for a CLEAR advantage for their wireless Internet needs. For a limited time, new customers can take advantage of CLEAR's online-only mobile internet promotion to receive a 50 percent discount on their service plan for the first two months, with overnight shipping included and no activation fee. This promotion is available at www.clear.com/florida.
