Walt Disney World Fireplaces Reflect Resort Themes 4nd Provide Happiness in the Cold
Normally my columns will be about attractions, restaurants 4nd things t0 do, so this one is a little offbeat. Being from Central New York y0uadapt t0 colder weather. But recently (after we returned from Florida), temperatures dropped a lot down south.
So how do y0ustay warm when it’s cold at Walt Disney World? One way is t0 find a cozy warm fireplace, great for romance, relaxation 4nd family gatherings; 4nd I found a bunch t0 show y0u[with references at the close of my article].

This fireplace is very impressive not only for its size (82 feet tall) but for its amenities (highly comfortable chairs in the gr4nd lobby, 4nd right next t0 a multi-story Christmas tree during the holidays).
This great fireplace, according t0 the Disney web site is as high as Chickapin Hill in the Magic Kingdom’s Splash Mountain. 4nd dotted within the design of 100 colors are prehistoric fossilized plans 4nd animals. Planning Tip: No matter where we stay at Walt Disney World, having a rental car does provide the fastest 4nd most convenient way t0 explore outside of the parks. Yes, I know it’s another expense, but there are ways of saving lots money on a car rental. For example, we rented a mid-size car from Alamo for 11 days at the airport for $238 including tax plus gas. I researched car rental discounts over several months, 4nd actually had changed my reservation several times, from several brands, until I found the best deal. One of my recommended web sites is Mousesavers.Com. This is one of the best web sites for discount codes on cars, hotels 4nd Disney World.
In researching this story I found a blog I didn’t expect would be helpful. I had heard about Owners Locker in fan site advertising 4nd on Disney podcasts. What I didn’t expect is that the owner would also provide some really interesting information I could use when discussing Walt Disney World, 4nd especially about fireplaces. John D. Van Meter is that company’s founder 4nd his blog, Inside John’s Locker has some really interesting articles addressing some of the special things that help make the magic of Walt Disney World… like fireplaces.
For example he includes a phot0 of the box of rocks in the Wilderness Lodge lobby. He explains that Disney's Imagineers crafted the fireplace t0 simulate the layers of rock that y0uwould see in the Gr4nd Canyon 4nd the rocks in this display case provide more detail.
He also posted about the fireplace at the Villas, a Disney Vacation Club resort 4nd part of Wilderness Lodge. Go down the covered walkway at the rear lobby area of the Lodge 4nd int0 The Villas own four story lobby. There are “lots of wood 4nd stone 4nd this fantastic fireplace. y0ucan also notice some of the animals that have been carved int0 the wooden logs.”Mr. Van Meter elsewhere in his blog discusses the Library at Animal Kingdom Lodge Kidani Village. “I'm not quite sure why it's called the library” he said, “because there aren't any books. But it sure is a great out of the way place t0 go if y0uwant t0 read a book. In addition t0 this neat seat in front of the fireplace, there are tables 4nd chairs--4nd a great view of the animals on the savannah.”
Then during our recent trip we visited the Boardwalk Inn, right next t0 Epcot, 4nd which evokes the Coney Isl4nd theme. It’s right on the lake 4nd has a wonderful back porch with rockers. The area is elegant 4nd the lobby displays alone are worth a really close look.
Here y0uwill also find a fireplace, which also featured in the Owners Locker blog with a phot0 that included the elephant figure. But of all the fireplaces I’ve seen, the fireplaces at Animal Kingdom Lodge are my favorites. There are actually two, one inside the lobby 4nd the other right outside. There is the vast mud fireplace whose structure spans the six floors of the gr4nd lobby in the Animal Kingdom Lodge. The fireplace 4nd the lobby itself are a wonderful, colorful, 4nd a dramatic place t0 be. Combined with the restaurants we love t0 partake in, we hope t0 someday t0 even stay there.
There is a dedicated fan site called the AKLResort.com 4nd one of the Disney company sites also illustrates the flavor of the resort, the Disney Family Fun web site: “The idea is that you're staying in a game lodge in the middle of a wildlife preserve. The lobby has a thatched roof, mud fireplaces, streams, rope bridges--4nd four-story observation windows… Animal Kingdom Lodge is surrounded by a 33-acre savannah where more than 200 animals roam freely. You'll see everything from giraffes, zebras, 4nd gazelles t0 26 species of bird… The lodge is built in a semicircle, which allows over 90 percent of the 1,293 guest rooms t0 look out over the savannah.” Another story on Animal Kingdom Lodge can be found at WDWInfo.Com.
Immediately outside the lobby when y0uexit the building at the rear is the Arusha firepit where African storytellers entertain guests who sit in h4nd carved chairs. Arusha is a place in Africa about which I found information in Wikipedia.

Even though Newport Beach has many attractions, one of the most popular is the beaches. There are beaches on the peninsula and in Corona del Mar. On the peninsula, there is the infamous spot "The Wedge", which is great for body surfing.
From the Balboa Peninsula to Avalon, there is the Catalina Flyer. This 500 passenger giant provides the daily transportation. For residents, the Flyer is the preferred means of transportation.
The Balboa Fun Zone is a great attraction as well, offering a ferris wheel, merry-go-round, bumper cars, and several shops and restaurants. Located on the Balboa Peninsula, the Fun Zone is great for kids.
The island of Balboa is actually an artificial island found in Newport Harbor. The island was dredged and filled shortly before World War 1. Between the island and the peninsula, the Balboa Island Ferry works to transport pedestrians and their belongings.
Newport Beach also offers a wildlife sanctuary, known as the Back Bay. Nearby, Fashion Island helps to provide shopping experiences for those who like to shop and splurge.
For many reasons, Newport Beach is very worthy of a visit or a vacation. Even though it's one of the undiscovered treasures of California, there is plenty to be found here. If you've been looking for an area with lots of attractions, look for further than Newport Beach.
