Extended Stay Hotels Target a New Travel Audience

Meant to serve approximately 20 percent of travelers -- many of them on business -- who check in for five or more nights, extended stay hotels were a 1980s innovation, offering larger closets, living areas, full kitchens, laundry rooms and discounts for guests who were willing to stay in what were often out-of-the-way suburban locations. These extended stay hotels were primarily aimed at budget customers who were willing to compromise atmosphere and service. But, as the number of such hotels has risen, so has the quality. There are now more services, better designs and, locations in well-known cities. Popular chains such as Extended Stay; Hawthorn Suites; and Residence Inn by Marriot all offer guests amenities to make a longer stay more comfortable, affordable and home like. However, while these chains offer spacious accommodations, kitchens, and work areas they lack a true, home-like atmosphere or personal touch. So, what are other choices are available? Many business and leisure travelers in addition to retirees are taking advantage of more luxurious extended stay hotels. Rather than play the snowbird game and have the headache of maintaining two homes, many retirees are opting for convenience and less responsibility. As a result, higher-end hotels are finding ways to cater to this new crowd.
