With the crazy changes in the economy lately, it's been really hard for my family and I to take a vacation. We used to take vacations all the time. We have traveled to places all over the continental U.S. and took a lot of day trips, but now we can't really afford to do that. In order to save money for bills and the daily essentials, we have cut back on all the "extras." So now, when we decide we want to see a movie, we will typically rent one instead of going to the theater. Or, if we want to go to a theme park, we will try and find local discounts before we will consider it. Although no one in my family works there, I know a lot of people who go there all the time because of someone in their close circle who works there.

Another really cool thing that we tend to do in lieu of spending a lot of money on a vacation is going to the beach. Even if it's just for the day, it can seem like a real getaway to sit and relax in the sand and surf. If you are by yourself or have a family, there is really something for everyone at the beach and it's virtually free. In Florida, we have a lot of beaches and a lot of them have free public access parking as well. If you live in a state that doesn't have a body of water you can swim in or if it is typically too cold year round to swim, then you can always find a local college or university and find out when their public swim times are. When I was younger we would always go to the local college for public swim nights on Friday and I would meet my friends there. This is a lot of fun for kids especially! If you don't have access to a public pool, you could always get the family together for a night at a local hotel that has an indoor heated pool for the cooler months and have an overnight away from home.

Another really fun activity to do instead of taking a full vacation is having a camp out in the back yard or in your living room. This can be a romantic thing to do if you are a couple or fun for the family if you have children. You can set up games and roast marshmallows (or cook them over the stove if you are indoors) and/or drink wine by the fire for a more romantic setting. With some candles and soft music it can be the perfect escape from everyday life without costing a fortune. With kids, simply cooking their favorite meal and letting them eat it in the tent or on the floor if you are inside can be a really fun event!
