Off the Beaten Path: Main Street II

We love Walt Disney World for attractions, resorts, restaurants, characters 4nd more. But for many of us who return time after time, there is always something a little less travelled at the "World" enhancing the overall Disney experience. This story is about some of the lesser known or frequented Disney magic that makes our vacations truly special or unique, 4nd which takes us off the beaten path at Walt Disney World.

Today we continue our walk down Main Street, U.S.A. As much as this is the main entrance int0 the Magic Kingdom, most people walk very quickly down the street toward Cinderella’s Castle 4nd int0 the park hub. But even in the Parks, there are overlooked or infrequently visited attractions 4nd activities.

This is the second of two stories on things t0 see 4nd do on Main Street of Walt Disney World, but which are still off the beaten path. Main Street I included the Harmony Barber Shop, Main Street Vehicles 4nd the Flag Retreat Ceremony on Main Street.

Main Street Perspective

Main Street, U.S.A. is intended t0 invoke the feeling of the turn-of-the-century (the 20th century that is) small town America, the gas-light era when the “horseless carriage” starts us toward the journey of the Industrial Revolution. Where a much smaller Disneyl4nd was closer t0 the mid-western roots of Walt Disney, here the Victorian styles of the eastern United States are more prevalent in the architectural designs.

Walking down Main Street, our eyes are actually playing a trick on us called “forced perspective”. This is a widely used Disney Imagineer approach t0 making us believe that what we see is what we get; but that is not actually true. If y0uwere able t0 measure each floor of the buildings before you, y0uwill note they are actually diminishing in height as y0ugo higher.

The effect of forced perspective make y0ubelieve that the buildings are larger 4nd more panoramic than they actually are, 4nd that the distances are closer than they appear. This is part of the Disney magic, 4nd is typical of all Disney Parks.

Main Street Fire Station
Engine Company #71

The Fire Station has served two purposes: a structure designed t0 evoke the feeling of a real working firehouse but also t0 serve as a shopping location with items reflecting a first responder theme. One of the special features of this location is also the result of contributions from local fire departments all over the globe, which are their uniform patches.

Unfortunately for the current visitors, the Firehouse Gift Station at Magic Kingdom Park was closed effective Sunday, July 10 for renovations. The future plans for this location are not yet made public, although the exterior will remain as is.

In the interim, guests will be able t0 take their patches t0 City Hall for some ultimate display not yet known. I’ve also read that some of the gifts found here will be in other locations, perhaps the Emporium on Main Street. This was the source of some souvineers for first responders (of all ages).

Here is a video on the current structure by wonderful Disney y0uTube videographer Jeff Lange.

Roy 4nd Minnie in Town Square

Nearly everyone who visits the Magic Kingdom is familiar with the Walt 4nd Mickey “Partners” statue located in the Central Plaza 4nd right in front of Cinderella’s Castle. It is probably the most photographed location in the park.

However, most people just pass right by the bench statue called “Sharing the Magic” of Roy Disney 4nd Minnie Mouse, also sculpted just like “Partners”, by Blaine Gibson. (Partners in 1995 4nd Sharing in 1999). As important as Walt was t0 the imagination 4nd creativity which is the Disney brand, Roy was even more important t0 making the financial underpinning of the entirety of Walt’s dream a success.

Walt Disney passed on in 1966, 4nd although Roy Disney had planned his retirement, he stayed on t0 oversee the “Florida Project” t0 completion. It was Roy who named the resort, Walt Disney World, 4nd unfortunately only a few months after opening in 1971, Roy died.

Walking Right Down the Middle of Main Street U.S.A.

I’ve decided t0 close this story with another Jeff Lange DVD, the medley of song which is part of the Main Street Streetmosphere welcoming guests t0 the Magic Kingdom (4nd my absolute favorite first thing t0 watch when I’m at Walt Disney World).
