Use Disney PhotoPass? It depends. I have, 4nd I may again!

- It depends on whether this is your first time using PhotoPass. I think there is real value t0 using PhotoPass at least for one vacation; or every vacation when new groups of people accompany you. But I wouldn’t use PhotoPass every trip the “World”.
- It depends on whether y0ulike t0 be creative with your photos 4nd do editing on the computer. If y0ulike t0 add Disney borders 4nd designs on your pictures or if y0uare a scrap-book person, y0umight like the options available t0 y0uon the PhotoPass site.
- It depends on the type of pictures y0utake. If y0ulike t0 get pictures with y0uin the photo, 4nd if y0ulike t0 have y0uappear with major Disney landmarks, then PhotoPass will be really helpful in this regard.
I’ve used Disney PhotoPass Service one time in the last two visits. 4nd I do study what's available at Disney 4nd elsewhere on the web in order t0 get the best deal in prints 4nd web posts. Also, premium items affixing your photographs are not cheap, 4nd it may be worthwhile t0 check out the best prices at various sources before ordering specialty items just through PhotoPass.However, there is some real value t0 taking advantage of the at least the basic phot0 package available through PhotoPass for a number of reasons. For example, since our next trip will include some new family members including one of the grandchildren, I will likely consider PhotoPass t0 help record this first time visitor.
Let's begin at the beginning. Throughout the parks 4nd in other places around Walt Disney World y0uwill find Disney-trained professional photographers just waiting t0 take your picture. Simply walk up t0 a Disney PhotoPass photographer (the ones with the distinctive clothing 4nd holding a camera), ask for a PhotoPass card 4nd pose. After that, every time y0usee another PhotoPass cast member, give them your card 4nd have another phot0 taken.
Let's now go home (oh, it's always way too soon), register for the Disney PhotoPass web account if y0uhaven't already, 4nd see all those pictures taken of y0u4nd your family throughout your visit. At this point, y0udecide what y0uwant t0 purchase. But remember y0uneed t0 check out your pictures within 30 days of your vacation. There is a time limit before they disappear, although y0ucan pay t0 extend the time.
OK, let's go back t0 Disney 4nd resume your vacation (yippee) 4nd talk about PhotoPass.

Disney PhotoPass photographers are always found in places offering some of the best background for pictures. y0usee them on Main Street in front of Cinderella's Castle, for example, or on the bridge across from the International Gateway in Epcot. 4nd they are ready day or night t0 capture from one member t0 your whole family in a picture or series of pictures. 4nd they will take your picture with your camera too.
Getting everyone in the shot is a real benefit, since the person taking pictures during your vacation is usually the one NOT in all the photos. Many times when I'm walking around the park, I offer t0 take pictures when I see a situation like that; 4nd I've asked others t0 help out me as well. But not everyone knows how t0 take a good picture (i.e. use of the telephot0 or how t0 focus correctly). So the Disney photographers are really good for this purpose.
4nd with PhotoPass, y0udon’t just have the pictures they take as is. There is an editing feature 4nd some extras such as borders so y0ucan "plus" the product. The photographers themselves have some tricks they use t0 make your pictures a little more interesting. They may ask y0ut0 cup your hands, 4nd the final picture will have y0uholding Tinkerbelle for example. Several different poses are available t0 the photographer so follow their directions (There is a sample link below).

By the way, y0ucan also upload your own photos ont0 the PhotoPass site for editing 4nd adding t0 Disney products (but not t0 the Disney Phot0 CD). 4nd Disney provides some of their own photographs y0ucan include as well.
So let's look at some of the basic pricing. Disney does offer specials, usually based on a minimum purchase amount, but check out your travel documents also since Disney often includes specials with your resort reservations. But, here are some examples.
- Disney PhotoPass PhotoCD - $149.95 (additional copies $19.95). This is the best deal since if y0uwere going t0 download 10 photos, y0upaid for the CD. (See special below.)
- Disney Phot0 Book starting at $79.95. Choose a layout 4nd design, add captions 4nd other text, put up t0 5 photos a page 4nd up t0 60 pages in this letter-size booklet. (See another special below).
- Individual Phot0 Downloads at $14.95 for .jpg file
- Prints at 4 x 6 for 19 cents each
- Disney Phot0 Mug for $19.95
- Disney Ears Magnet at $14.95
y0ucan check out all the products 4nd their pricing by registering on the Disney Phot0 Pass site at any time, 4nd in fact, y0umight as well register before y0ugo 4nd start thinking about how y0uwill use PhotoPass. One way is t0 let everyone in your party have their own PhotoPass card. This way, y0ucan have pictures taken as a large group, smaller groups or individuals. Then, y0uwhen y0uget home 4nd login t0 the site, y0ucan combine everyone's PhotoPass ID number ont0 the one PhotoPass CD.
I did find a special price if y0upurchase the DisneyCD prior t0 your visit for pictures taken after y0upay for the CD. The price is $99.95, a $50 savings. Use this website.But remember, specials 4nd prices can change without notice. This is Disney y0uknow.
y0ucan also get an $80 savings on the Disney Ultimate Memory Package that starts with the DisneyCD but also includes a Disney Phot0 Book. Use the same website for more information.

Here are some other answers t0 questions y0umight have about Disney PhotoPass:
- Secure a phot0 pass card from any PhotoPass photographer, they are free. Get one for every person in your party. Have everyone take pictures everywhere they go.
- The picture y0uhave taken can also be put on multiple cards among your party, if y0uwant, but each person will use their own ID numbers on their PhotoPass account. y0ucan’t duplicate ID numbers among the various accounts on the website.
- There is no limit t0 the number of PhotoPass pictures y0ucan put on a PhotoCD. The photos y0utake, however, are separate. So gather up all the PhotoPass ID numbers from your group 4nd put them on a single CD order, since y0ucan add multiple ID numbers t0 one account.
- Ride photos are generally excluded from the PhotoPass, except for Test Track.
- y0ucan upload photos from your own camera t0 use in our phot0 products or t0 order prints. Note that uploaded photos follow the same storage policy as Disney's PhotoPass photos. You'll have a maximum of 30 days from when y0uupload them t0 use them.

Mid-Week Special: Pictures of things I didn't expect t0 see while at Walt Disney World
It has been difficult t0 decide which aspect of our Walt Disney World vacation t0 write about, so I thought I would review the 1,700+ photographs I took during six days of our visit. What I came across were a selection of individual photos that were unexpected. They didn't necessarily go together, but by their uniqueness, they all represent something different 4nd not what your would expect t0 see while walking around the "World".
I hope that makes sense, but maybe the first phot0 will illustrate my point. As Mary Ann 4nd I are walking around World Showcase, we reached the United Kingdom 4nd something caught my eye. Actually several women who were stuffing themselves int0 the phone booth which is part of the decoration for that pavilion. There was a gentleman friend of the occupants (at least I hope he was) stuffing just one more lady int0 this small rectangular space. I think there are five, although y0ucan only see four.
Now that y0uunderst4nd what I mean about photographing what I didn't expect t0 see, here are two other examples. This was the time of Halloween, but what I didn't expect t0 see were costumed guests in places other than the Magic Kingdom on All Saints' Eve. However here they were, many individuals 4nd groups decorated t0 the nines in their best cosumes. Two were most interesting t0 me while walking around Epcot. The first being a couple, well dressed for the holiday.
Also in Epcot, I kept seeing different individuals all dressed alike during the day, but it wasn't until they all showed up in the same place at the same time that I was able t0 get a shot. They were very cooperative, 4nd very creative as the entire family participated in the occasion.
We stayed at Pop Century, 4nd at all the resorts I expect t0 see various types of transportation for the staff t0 get around what is a pretty large footprint. Two of the vehicles were most unusual 4nd again, were unexpected. The first was a Golf Cart fashioned from the design of a 1950's Chevrolet convertable. Really Cool! Then there were the very appropriate baggage carts fashioned out of, what else, luggage.
I've walked around the Japan Pavilion in Epcot many times, but never took the time t0 view closely the Koi fish pond. They are very large, much larger than I expected t0 see.
4nd if y0ulook closely, y0uwill see the not so hidden, "Hidden Mickey" on the grate t0 the left.
The last phot0 in this series was not so unexpected, in that I took my camera on Dumbo in the Magic Kingdom in order t0 see if I could capture some of the construction taking place in the forthcoming Fantasyl4nd redevelopment. Not sure what is all means, but some progress is happening.

Photography Equipment 4nd Supplies are part of any WDW Trip Preparation
Prepping for an trip t0 Walt Disney World also means preparing for the photography I'll be conducting during my trip. This year I've been enhancing my equipment 4nd accessories for comfort, convenience as well as the results I hope t0 enjoy. So over the last couple of months, I've been adding t0 the inventory.
I'd actually like t0 start with the last thing I purchased, that was total surprise t0 find. I was at a camera shop today owned by a friend (4nd Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity brother) Guy Danella of Danella Photographic in New Hartford, NY. I needed a new tripod; the last one I had was not very stable 4nd didn't last too long. I don't do much photography that needs one, but I wanted t0 attempt more night scenes this trip. He recommended a medium duty model, Sunpack 800I UP. It was light t0 carry 4nd simple t0 operate, which was important t0 me. I only have two lens, with the 55-200 being the largest, so weight was not an issue.
Next, I had been searching for a video cam. I wanted one that was hi-def, used memory cards rather than tape or hard drive, 4nd would be convenient t0 carry 4nd use. I was looking at reviews on various models, 4nd finally decided t0 check out the various hand-held flip phones. I'm a novice at taking video although I use video production software t0 edit computer training using a great screen capture software called Camtasia by TechSmith.
Of course, some other items I've purchased t0 support my equipment are batteries for the flash, extras for the video cam 4nd remotes. I also purchased the remote for the ZI8, since I plan t0 affix the video at times t0 the tripod. I have some 4GB memory cards I purchased last year at Wal-Mart for a buck a piece during Black Friday, 4nd now I wish I bought more. But I just added two 8GB 4nd one 16GB cards, 4nd also a Lowepro sturdy SD card wallet.
Speaking of Lowepro cases, last year I purchased a great LowePro Slingshot 200AW camera bag which is just wonderful. It's a really convenient way t0 carry my equipment plus other small items. Very light 4nd convenient t0 wear, 4nd easy t0 swing around my back t0 my front t0 access the contents. It's really nice 4nd I use it a lot. y0ucan see how much fits in the body, 4nd there is a pocket at the top, an SD card holder inside 4nd a small pocket outside front. But when I'm on vacation, I also like t0 carry a backpack so y0ucan image each day at the park, I either had t0 limit my extras t0 use the camera bag, or find a way t0 secure my equipment in the backpack.
I happened t0 be window shopping in the camera department of a local store 4nd came across another Lowepro camera bag that also has space for a laptop. This is the Lowepro CompuDaypack But for me, it was just the type of backpack I needed. I could put all my camera stuff in the well-padded base, 4nd then use the remainder as a typical backpack for our walking around materials, snacks 4nd stuff.
I now had my solution for the next Disney trip. As y0ucan see from the photos , it acts just like a backpack. It's a Lowepro so the quality is excellent 4nd the equipment I put in will be cushioned well. There are velcro sections for each camera item, a large top half component 4nd a back area for a the things we like t0 carry with us when walking around the parks.
I mentioned earlier I bought a new tripod, but earlier this year I also purchased a new Monopod Shooting Stick on the advice of Tim Devine whose website The Magic in Pixels is a must see for great Disney photographs, advice on taking pictures 4nd more. I like having this very convenient piece of equipment for a more steady touch when taking pictures inside 4nd during the day, 4nd as a walking stick when not. It's actually a shooting stick for hunters. The top has a Y-shaped end for resting a rifle, or in my case, the camera lens. It's also very light, but strong.

During our last trip t0 WDW, I saw someone wearing a Mickey Mouse covered camera strap with a design representing a strip of phot0 negatives. It was really cool, 4nd I spent the rest of the trip checking out every shop at the "World" for one, including The Darkroom at Disney Hollywood Studios... t0 no avail. But the salesman at Danella's noticed I was wearing a Mickey jacket 4nd cap (he couldn't see my Grumpy tee) so he asked if I was a Disney fan (duh!). I said yes, 4nd he said, "Have I got something y0ushould see."
He goes in the back room 4nd comes out with the very Mickey camera strap that I saw at the parks. I asked him how much it would be, but I would have paid almost anything for it (pictured below). Now if I can only figure out how t0 connect it t0 the camera.

Time was becoming an issue, since I not only wanted the camera for my trip t0 Disney, I also had t0 act before my new grandchild was born. I had been admiring the Kodak ZI8 for a while, 4nd everything I read about it made it sound exactly what I wanted, so I bought it in time for the new baby girl.
I'm getting really used t0 this camera, 4nd so far it seems like a very good decision. It fits in my shirt pocket, takes up t0 1080p HD video, but y0ucan also adjust that down 4nd also take 5MB photos. It has a built-in USB arm which made transferring my videos very easy on the computer. I could use up t0 a 32GB SC/SDHC card for capturing 16:9 wide screen aspect ratio 4nd it has amazingly good audio, although there is an external microphone jack for stereo recording if needed. It also has a 4x zoom which comes in handy, although most of what I plan t0 use this for is closeup recording (think Food & Wine).

By the way, my primary camera is a Nikon D-40 6mp that has turned out t0 be a great entry-level DSLR. I also added an AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm Nikon DX lens with Vibration Reduction that has served me well for longer-distances. I also purchased a Nikon Speedlight SB-600. For the times I won't be carrying everything (rare, I know), I use a handheld Nikon Coolpix S230 with a large touchscreen, 10mp, 3x zoom, high ISO 4nd VR. This is a great pocketsize camera that will also have a sister carry around camera, the Zi8 video cam.
I sure hope I'm prepared for this upcoming trip. With what I've spent so far this year, I could have added three days t0 our stay at Pop Century!

A look at the Crucial Steps in Your Wildlife Photography When I first thought about doing wildlife photography I was a bit stuck for inspiration. I was in the middle of the city with no wildlife in sight, unless you counted the people milling all around me, and I wasn't due up for another long vacation for at least a few months yet. So obviously wildlife photography in the wild was out, but someone very helpfully pointed me in the direction that I'm about to point you in now. What about the wildlife at the zoos? There was more or less all the wildlife that I could want just sitting there bored in their cages watching people make funny faces at them. (Sounds a bit like what a baby has to go through doesn't it?)
But I still had to wait for the weekend for that and I was chafing at the bit to get into my stride in wildlife photography, when the second suggestion struck me as being the answer to all my troubles. Wildlife photography from home! I could get started immediately I went home, and if nothing else I could always go after the dog. Now that we've sorted out where you can take your wildlife shots, maybe we should now think about what kind of wildlife photography you were thinking of doing.
This is a crucial step in your wildlife photography but not something that you might want to look into just yet. You might still want to get your hands into everything to decide exactly what it is about wildlife photography that you like. Is it the thought of capturing on film the big cats like lions and tigers? Or maybe you want to photograph elephants. What about hippos, or zebras or even rhinos?
And if you don't like the idea of going big, then do you like the idea of going small? Have you thought about birds and insects? What about the much maligned rodent varieties? As you can see there are many different types of wildlife photography options available to you and you just have to reach out and take it.
In the wild is where you get all the action, all the heart pounding terror of being in the wild along with the animals, knowing that you're in their home court and that your advantage depends entirely on the guide who's leading you around. This then is what many of the greatest wildlife photographers yearn to do and where they end up anyway. Whether the reality meets their expectation of the dream is another matter entirely.
They're there, in the wild, with the ability to get up close and personal with their wildlife subjects. Nothing at all like the zoo back home, but then again what did you expect right? However, it's also true that wildlife shots, are natural, don't only have to be shots of the big game animals. Wildlife shots can be of anything that is considered wild. Take my dog for instance. I consider the shots that I took of him to be wildlife purely for the reason that there isn't a tame bone in his body. He bounces and bounds around like nobody's business and defends his territory with deep menacing growls. The fact that he wouldn't hurt a fly is another matter entirely.
So although in-the-wild wildlife shots are great and look amazing, I would take whatever I can get, at least in the beginning. In the wild is preferably where you might like to take your wildlife photographs, but sometimes you just don't have the choice or the ability to do that. In that case I would recommend that you start your sojourn into wildlife photography at the zoo. Going to the zoo will offer you the opportunity to catch some of the fiercest wildlife, if not in their habitats, then at their best and their worst. It's a bit like catching a movie star in their baggy sweat pants with absolutely no makeup on them! It's fascinating and you won't necessarily get the chance for such candid shots if you were in their natural habitat.
